Read Across America is a year-round program that aims to celebrate and create a nation of diverse readers by highlighting books that reflect the rich diversity of our society. Diverse books are essential for developing early literacy skills and fostering a love of reading in children of all backgrounds and identities. They also help children learn about themselves and others, and build empathy and respect for different perspectives and experiences.
Diverse books can act as both mirrors and windows for young readers. Mirrors are books that reflect the child’s own culture, family, or community, and help them affirm their sense of self and belonging. Windows are books that offer a glimpse into the lives of people who are different from the child, and help them expand their worldview and understanding of others. Both types of books are important for children to see the beauty and value of diversity, and to recognize the common humanity that connects us all.
The Challenges of Finding and Accessing Diverse Books
Despite the benefits of diverse books, they are still underrepresented and underutilized in many classrooms, libraries, and homes. According to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, only about 25% of children’s books published in 2020 featured characters of color, and even fewer featured characters with disabilities, LGBTQ+ identities, or other marginalized groups. This means that many children do not see themselves or their peers in the books they read, and may feel excluded or invisible in the literary world.

The Solutions and Opportunities of Read Across America
Read Across America is a program that strives to overcome these challenges and provide more opportunities for children to read and enjoy diverse books. Some of the ways that Read Across America promotes diversity and inclusion in children’s literature are:
- Providing a curated list of diverse books for every month of the year, based on various themes, topics, and genres
- Offering online resources and activities for parents, teachers, and librarians to engage children with diverse books and foster a culture of reading
- Partnering with diverse authors, illustrators, and publishers to showcase their work and amplify their voices
- Organizing events and campaigns to celebrate diverse books and readers, such as the annual Read Across America Day on March 2
- Advocating for more diversity and equity in the children’s book industry and the education system
Read Across America is a program that believes that there is room for all readers in every community and that diverse books can make a positive difference in the lives of children and society.
